About LimitationCalc
LimitationCalc exists to answer one deceptively hard question as clearly as possible: "How long do I have to file?" Legal deadlines are among the most consequential — and most confusing — parts of pursuing a claim. Miss one, and even the strongest case can be lost forever. We built a free, fast, no-signup tool to help people understand their deadline before it is too late.
Our Mission
To make statute of limitations information accessible to everyone — not just lawyers. We translate dense statutory language into plain English, show you a real date and countdown instead of a vague "two years," and flag the tolling rules and recent law changes that competitors ignore.
How We Source and Verify Our Data
Our database covers all 50 US states plus DC, the UK (England & Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland), and all Canadian provinces and territories — across nine common claim types. For each, we record the standard limitations period, the governing statute citation, whether a discovery rule applies, and notable tolling provisions.
Our data process works as follows:
- We compile periods and citations from published statutes and authoritative public legal references.
- We track recent legislative changes (such as Florida's 2023 personal injury reform and Louisiana's 2024 prescription change) and surface them as alerts.
- We date-stamp our last review so you know how current the data is.
- We link, wherever possible, directly to the official state or national code so you can verify the source yourself.
An Honest Note on Accuracy
Statutes of limitations are complex, change over time, and contain exceptions that depend on the specific facts of a case. We work hard to keep our data accurate and current, but we are a free informational tool — not a law firm, and our data should be independently verified. Before relying on any deadline shown here, confirm it with a licensed attorney in the relevant jurisdiction and with the official statute. We would rather tell you this plainly than give you false confidence about something this important.
How We Stay Free
LimitationCalc is supported by advertising. Ads never change the deadline information we show you, and our calculations are not influenced by any advertiser. We do not currently take referral fees or run sponsored attorney links — when we point you to a lawyer, it is only general guidance to consult one, never a paid placement.
